INTRODUCTION
Land Below The Wind Agnes Keith's Land Below The Wind was written during an era when Sabah was known as North Borneo, and when life was very much different from today's.

Reprinted many times, this classic, of Agnes Keith's observations and reflections of the time, is a true-to-life record of society and culture then and of the captivating natural beauty of Sabah.

Today, Sabah continues to be known as the "land below the wind", a phrase used by seafarers in the past to describe all the lands south of the typhoon belt, but which Agnes effectively reserved for Sabah through her book.

AUTHOR
Agnes Newton Keith was brought up in Hollywood, graduated from the University of California, and in 1934 went to Sandakan, then British North Borneo as the wife of Harry G. Keith, Conservator of Forests and Director of Agriculture of North Borneo.

Her husband persuaded her to write a book on her Borneo experience and impressions and enter it in the 1939 Atlantic Monthly Non-Fiction Prize Contest.

That book, Land Below the Wind, won the contest by unan-imous vote of the judges. Three Came Home is its sequel, although it tells a story as different as peace is from war.
