The
figures for the salary range given below are on a monthly basis
and for the incremental range, it is on a yearly basis.
The average income per month for an unskilled
worker is RM500, while a driver is RM550 and a trainee technician
is RM400.
Salary wage rates are determined by individul contracts
or collective agreements between employers and trade unions. The
following is an example of a current collective agreement between
the Sabah Commercial Employers Union (SCEU) and United Motor Works
(UMW). It shows grade, category, salary range and increment of current
wages. This agreement is from 1990-1993.

EMPLOYEES PROVIDENT FUND (EPF)
(Effective From January 1996)
The Employees Provident Fund Act of 1951 requires both employers
and employees to contribute a certain percentage of the employees
wages to the EPF. The employee rate of contribution is 11% of his
monthly wages to be deducted from his wages and 12% contribution
are due from the employer on the employee's monthly wages. Failure
to comply with this regulation is an offence.
Every employee over 16 years of age
is liable to contribute unless he has withdrawn his credit in full
from the Fund on having attained the age of 55 years. This scheme
provides for the payments of benefit to an employee upon attaining
the age of 55 years or to his immediate family in the event of his
death. Expatriates and domestic servants are precluded from compulsory
contribution to EPF.

EMPLOYEE'S SOCIAL SECURITY ACT 1969
The Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) administers the Employment
Injury Insurance Scheme and the Invalidity Pension Scheme as provided
for under the Employee's Social Security Act 1969.
All establishments including factories, employing
worker earning wages not exceeding RM2,000 a month are required
to insure their workers under the two social security schemes.
The Employment Injury Insurance Scheme provides employees with coverage
in the event of any disablement or death due to employment injury
by way of crash benefits and medical care. The contribution is borne
solely by the employer and is about 1.25% of the wages of an employee.
The Invalidity Pension Scheme provides a 24-hour coverage to employee
against invalidity and death due to any cause before the age of
55 years. the total contribution is about 1% of the wages of an
employee and is shared by the employer and employee equally.
SOCSO only covers Malaysian Workers and Permanent Residents. Foreign
Workers are covered by the Workman's Compensation Act 1952.
