SECTORAL DEVELOPMENT
Tourism
ACCOMMODATION | RECREATION & SPORT | RESTAURANTS | TOUR OPERATORS

The Sabah Government is putting great emphasis on the development of the tourism sector in Sabah. In the 1995 statistic, the restaurant and hotel sectors contributed RM 115.2 Million (at 1978 value) to Sabah's GDP.

A great variety of cuisine is available in Sabah. Traditional Malay food is typically hot and spicy. Chinese cooking is served in almost all towns or villages. Western cooking is available in all hotels
.
ACCOMMODATION
In the whole of Malaysia, the number of hotel rooms has rapidly increased from 28,432 in 1981 to 65,907 in 1994. The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board growth estimates for 1995 were 73,013 hotel rooms. The estimation for year 2000, assuming 70% of annual room occupancy, is 77,104 rooms.

The requirement for a range of international standard accommodation facilities is a prerequisite of the international tourist market. For this reason the state government considered it necessary to take a lead in developing the tourism sector in this direction. Thus, since 1980, the State has invested in major hotel development through semi-government corporations such as:

*Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort (Sabah Foundation)
*Hyatt Kinabalu (SECDO)
*3 Perkasa hotels (SEDCO),
*Promenade Hotel and Api-Api Apartments and service units (SUDC)

However, the 1,105 rooms which the above hotels provide represent only 16.5 % of all available commercial accommodation rooms. The latest 198 accommodation establishments are owned and operated by private sectors.

A breakdown of existing hotels into two to three, three to four and four to five star rating are as follows:-

*Two to three star (budget/lower) : 62.6%,
*three to four star (mid-range): 23% and,
*four to five star (upmarket): 14.4%.

RECREATION & SPORT
There are ten sports centers run by various local authorities all over Sabah. The Likas Sports Complex in Kota Kinabalu has the full range of facilities for public use. It has a full-sized football (soccer) stadium, badminton , tennis and squash courts, a gymnasium and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Ten privately runned recreational clubs also offer their facilities to members and visitors.

Major hotels such as Tanjung Aru Beach Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La RasaRia Resort in Tuaran, Ramada Renaissance in Sandakan, and Marco Polo in Tawau also have facilities such as fitness centres and swimming pools.

There are currently 7 golf courses around the state and more courses are being built. The fees can range from RM20.00 to RM100.00 on weekdays and RM50.00 to RM200.00 on weekends for visitors. The premier club, Sabah Golf and Country Club in Kota Kinabalu, has an 18-hole course. The Kinabalu Golf Club has a 9-hole course at Tanjung Aru Beach Resort. Other courses are located in Sandakan, Kudat, Keningau and Ranau. The Ranau golf course situated on a 1,500-metre slope offers golfers a brand new experience.

Water sports such as white-water rafting, scuba diving and snorkeling are also popular in Sabah. Most tour and dive operators offer packages for them.
