There are a total of 1,142 primary and secondary schools in the whole of Sabah in 1998. Among these schools, 995 are primary schools and 147 are secondary schools.

There are a total of 453,702 pupils and 26,655 teachers in primary and secondary schools combined. The 1998 figures also show that the pupil to teacher ratio in primary and secondary schools are 16: 1 and 19:1 respectively.

Among these 298,023 are primary and 155,679 secondary school pupils. There are 18,541 and 8,114 teachers in primary and secondary schools respectively.
